Los Angeles: On August 1, 2001 at approximately 1:00 p.m., neighbors in the area of 10101 South Anzac Avenue were concerned after not seeing Ms. Ruby Scott for over one day. Ms. Scott was somewhat of a neighborhood icon; she was eighty-one years old and had resided in the neighborhood for over thirty years. Ms. Scott was also known to confront gang members who would loiter in front of her property and sometimes vandalize the area with their gang graffiti.
Officers assigned to Southeast Community Police Station responded to a welfare check at the Scott residence. After a neighbor unlocked the front door of the residence, the officers observed Ms. Scott, apparently deceased and the victim of foul play.
Detectives John Zambos and Roger Allen responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. The subsequent investigation by the detectives revealed that one to two days prior to Ms. Scott’s discovery, unknown suspect(s) entered the residence by smashing a side window. Once inside, the suspect(s) physically assaulted Ms. Scott. The residence was ransacked but it wasn’t apparent if any particular property was taken by the suspect(s).
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has listed the death as a homicide. Ms. Scott suffered blunt force type injuries.
On September 4, 2001, Los Angeles City Council Member Janice Hahn introduced a motion requesting a $25,000 reward leading to the arrest of the suspect(s) involved in the murder of Ms. Ruby Scott. City Council Member Janice Hahn, Commanding Officer of Southeast Community Police Station, Captain Patrick Gannon, and the family members of Ms. Scott will be attending the press conference.
Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Detectives Sal LaBarbera or John Zambos, Southeast Operations Support Division at 213-485-6902.
