Los Angeles:  Police responding to a man-with-a-gun call were confronted by a suspect who was armed with a rifle.

On October 9, 2011, just after 5 a.m., two North Hollywood patrol officers were called to the 7300 block of Vineland Avenue.  The Officers arrived at the scene and were confronted by the suspect, 47-year-old Julio Humberto Sandoval, who was standing in a driveway armed with a rifle.

Sandoval refused the officers’ order to drop his weapon and instead pointed it in their direction.  At that point, an officer-involved shooting with both officers occurred, and Sandoval was struck by gunfire and immediately taken into custody.

Los Angeles City Fire Department personnel transported Sandoval to a local hospital for treatment, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.  Neither officer was injured during the encounter.

The rifle that Sandoval was using was later found to be an air rifle that closely resembled an actual rifle.

Force Investigation Division detectives responded and are investigating the officer-involved shooting.

The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable.  Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved shooting.
