Why:
The LAPD will transport 30 children who are seriously ill with cancer from the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City to the Raleigh Studio in Hollywood in a Code-3 run with lights and sirens.  This will be the fourth year that the LAPD has supported the visit by the Sunshine Kids to Los Angeles.

The children will be transported by Los Angeles police reserve officers using 15 police vehicles with two reserve officers per vehicle.  Additional officers will attend the ceremony at the Sheraton Universal Hotel and at Raleigh Studios to greet the children as they arrive, along with the cast members of “The Closer.”  Gift baskets will be given out to each child with items donated by personnel from various Department entities.

Roll call is scheduled for September 10, 2009 at 8 a.m. in Studio Room No. 1.  The rooftop ceremony with the Sunshine Kids begins at 9:15 a.m. The children will then be transported to the Raleigh Studios about 10:30 a.m. and they should arrive at the studio at about 11 am.

Note:  All references to The Sunshine Kids, in whatever form (print video audio news story) must be cleared with the Sunshine Kids Director of Children Services Jenifer Wisler.

Each child is affected in varying degrees by the seriousness of his/her cancer.  Consequently, it is requested that the term “terminally ill” not be used.  Please refer to the children as “seriously ill.”  Some parents may request that their child not be interviewed by the media.  It is important to honor this request.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Media parking available on Buddy Holly Drive, East of Lankershim Blvd. and at the Raleigh Studios lot on Van Ness.  All media attending Raleigh Studios must contact Cassie Bryan in advance to be added to security access list.
