Updated: The officers involved in the below incident have been identified as Police Officer II Brandon Walthers, Serial No 37949 and Rodolfo Ledesma, Serial No. 37792
South Los Angeles: On Thursday, February 26, 2015 around 7:10 p.m., 77th Street Area Narcotics Enforcement Detail officers were working undercover, conducting a narcotic investigation in the area of 84th Street and Wall Street.
As the officers drove by a residence, located in the 200 block of East 84th Street, they heard a gunshot behind them. The officers looked back towards the residence and observed additional muzzle flashes coming from the area. The officers stopped their vehicle at which time an officer involved shooting occurred.
Responding units immediately contained the area and subsequently detained numerous males and females from the residence. During the course of the investigation, one male who was detained was identified as the man who shot at the officers. He was later identified as Courtney Daniel and arrested for 187 PC.
A semiautomatic pistol was recovered from the residence.
One officer was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries where he was treated and released.
Force Investigation Division responded to the incident and will conduct a thorough investigation. The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Departments use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved-shooting.
