"Suspect, Who Set his Ex-Girlfriend on Fire, has been Arrested"

Los Angeles – On July 2, 2000 at approximately 5:00am, Southeast Area officers and Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded to a disturbance call at 807 West 148th Street. The officers determined that a suspect had entered an unlocked rear door and poured a flammable liquid on a sleeping 19 year old female. Also in the bed was a 3 year old child.

Officers continued their investigation and were able to determine that the victims ex-boyfriend was most likely responsible for this incident. The officers made a follow-up to 3749 Manhattan Beach Boulevard where the ex-boyfriend was located and taken into custody.

The 19 year old victim was transported to the USC Medical center Burn Ward where she is listed in critical condition. The 3 year old child was unharmed.

The suspect is identified as John Cuong Nguyen, a 23 year old resident of Los Angeles. He has been booked at Southeast Area Jail for Attempt Murder and bail has been set at $1,055,000.

Criminal Conspiracy Section, Detective Support Division, is conducting the follow-up investigation in concert with Arson investigators of the Los Angeles City Fire Department.
