Tactical Unintentional Discharge (TUD) NRF047-22jc

November 30, 2022

On September 15, 2022, around 4:50 a.m., North Hollywood patrol officers responded to a radio call in the 10900 block of Bluffside Drive (a large multi-story apartment complex) for an Assault with a Deadly Weapon suspect who was reportedly armed with a gun. It was unclear at the time if the suspect was still inside his residence. A team of officers staged in the interior hallway outside of his apartment door while waiting to learn if SWAT would be responding.

An officer standing near the door to the suspect’s apartment, who was holding a ballistic shield in one hand and his pistol in the other, unintentionally discharged a round, striking himself in the left thigh. Other officers at scene immediately rendered first aid and carried the injured officer out of the complex. He was subsequently transported by rescue ambulance to a local hospital, where it was determined he had sustained a through and through gunshot wound. The officer was admitted for observation and was listed in stable condition.

Upon the arrival of SWAT, they cleared the suspect’s residence and determined he was not inside. The follow-up regarding the suspect’s whereabouts and any possible criminal prosecution to follow will be handled by North Hollywood Area detectives.

Detectives from Force Investigation Division responded to the scene and will be investigating the unintentional discharge.
