Why:
Take a Youth to Work Day was initiated in 1997 by The New Leaders in partnership with a host of local and state governmental entities and private sector businesses to respond to the overwhelming demand for increased mentoring.  The program identifies at-risk African-American young men in high school who are paired with African-American male professionals for a day of mentoring and career exposure.
African-American youth will be paired with mentors in various fields.  Youth well spend the workday accompanying their mentors on all work-related activities and meetings.  Mentors are encouraged to introduce their youth to key executives, assign relevant tasks and share their college and professional experience.  Students are encouraged to develop questions and consider preferred activities to ensure that the day is productive.
Prior to the event, The New Leaders will host a neck tie drive/fundraiser among the mentors who will participate in the event.  The students are asked to dress in professional attire for the day.
Take A Youth To Work Day has impacted the lives of hundreds of young men over the last eight years.  Students have gone on to secure employment with the mentors, educational scholarships have been awarded, and lifelong friendships have been formed.  Stories on the event have been featured in the Los Angeles Times, LA Sentinel, and on KCBS 2 News, KCAL 9, and KABC 7 Eyewitness News.  Radio stations 102.3 FM KJLH, 100.3 KKBT and 105.9 FM KPWR have also participated, along with a host of sponsors such as SBC, Edison and McDonalds, and the California Highway Patrol.
