On August 3, 1999 at about 11:40 p.m., Van Nuys patrol officers were flagged down by Robert Carson, age 34. Carson requested a "welfare check" on his girlfriend, Lea Thomas, age 21, who he claimed he had not seen for several days. Officers went to Thomas’s apartment and upon entering the apartment they found Thomas dead in the bedroom. It was determined that she died as a result of multiple stab wounds.

After questioning, Carson was arrested and booked. He is being held without bail at Los Angeles County Jail, Twin Towers. The case will be presented to the District Attorney on Friday August 6, 1999.
