WHY:
For more than 50 years, committed officers from the Los Angeles Police Department have visited the Blind Children’s Center for its annual Holiday Party, bringing their own Santa Claus to deliver hundreds of presents to the Center’s students. Continuing this long-standing tradition, officers from the LAPD Rampart and R&I Divisions will be onsite to greet families, deliver presents, and participate in a festive celebration that includes a special holiday performance by the students.
The Blind Children’s Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1938. Each year, the Center serves approximately 100 children who are blind or visually impaired and provides support services to more than 350 family members. The Center’s mission is to optimize each child’s development and opportunities to lead a meaningful life through early intervention and an educational curriculum specifically adapted to each student’s needs.
The Blind Children’s Center follows a family-focused approach that includes parents, siblings, grandparents, and caregivers in the educational process. Programs are fully inclusive, integrating sighted children into each class to promote social interaction and skill development. The Center’s multidisciplinary team utilizes leading-edge technology and adaptive devices to help students keep pace in the sighted world. As a model program, the Center impacts communities globally through presentations, conferences, research grants, and publications, with more than 750,000 copies distributed in 75 countries and translated into 17 languages.
