Two Shooting Deaths Appear To Be Gang Related

Los Angeles: On November 4, 2001, at approximately 2:30 A.M., Northeast Area Patrol Officers responded to the report of a shooting in the 6000 block of Fayette Street in the Highland Park area. Upon arrival at the scene, officers observed two victims who had sustained gunshot wounds. Edmundo Mendoza, a 44 year old male Hispanic was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital where he died as a result of his wounds at 3:07 A.M.. The second victim, a 21 year old male Hispanic, survived the shooting and is in stable condition.

Approximately 10 minutes later a second shooting occurred in the 5000 block of Aldama Street. Brian Schollaert, 18 years of age had been shot with an unknown type weapon. He was transported to Los Angeles County Medical Center where he died as a result of his wounds at 4:04 A.M.

Based on the close proximity and the short time span between the two incidents, Detectives believe these shootings may be related. The motive for the shootings appears to be gang related.
