Vandalism Hate Crime Suspect Arrested NR23089lr

Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department, Major Crimes Division (MCD) announces the arrest of the Islamic Center vandalism suspect.

On April 11, 2023, around 0030 hours, Olympic Division patrol officers received a radio call at the 500 block of Shatto Place. The comments of the call indicated, “near the parking lot entrance, suspect vandalized the mosque near Koreatown.”

The officers made contact with the suspect, later identified as 43-year-old, Carlos Moran, and detained him. Moran was wearing the same beanie, jacket, pants, and shoes described in the Community Alert. During the investigation, the officers reviewed the surveillance video provided by the Islamic Center and identified Moran as the suspect wanted for the vandalism/hate crime incident. Moran had a black sharpie in his possession at the time of arrest. Moran is a person experiencing homelessness in the Los Angeles area.

Moran was booked for 594.3(b) PC–Church Vandalism with the Hate Crime enhancement and a $10,000 misdemeanor warrant for 417(a)(1) PC, Booking No. 6584235. His bail is set for $85,000.
